Veteran Work Programs. Do They Exist?
Let me tell you a little personal story about my quest to find veteran work programs. And it’s not a pretty one so fasten your seatbelt. It really all started back when I got out of the Marine Corps in the mid 1980’s. Here I was 21 years old and just finished four years of honorable service. I needed a job so the first thing I did was try and get a job as a mail handler which I was in the service. I filled out all the paperwork, took the entrance test and passed. Then I was told to wait up to three months. Finally, I received a letter in the mail. It read in short. “No Available Jobs.”
I was pretty bummed out about that and ended up getting a job as a bus boy and put the whole veteran work program on the back burner. I needed to survive and with no family to go back to I was on my own in the big world. I found out there was something called affirmative action which meant that jobs would be going to people based on cultural background instead of qualifications. I also found out something else. If you are looking to find a job as a veteran and you have no connections you will not get a job. No way.
The Long Struggle That Took Decades
I am now in my mid fifties and looking back I have had a wide number of jobs that took me over a number of states within the United States. Most of them were difficult manual labor types and my last was as a commercial electrician. It took four years of schooling to accomplish the title of journeyman electrician. And get this. Once I graduated my schooling it got very difficult to find jobs. Want to know why? Because many contractors didn’t want to pay for qualified workers. They started hiring illegal workers who took full advantage of the opportunities. I’m not slamming on these people. They need work so they do what they can. But those of us who are qualified lose out because of shady contractors who would rather take the chance and hire someone illegally to save a buck then get a quality worker.
So, after years of struggling and working for the “Man” I decided to brush up on my computer skills and found something called “Affiliate Marketing.” At first it sounded like something younger people were into. You know like college educated digital age kids that want to work smarter and not harder. Maybe they are smarter. Maybe they see how hard their parents worked and ended up broke and stressing on paying the bills. I wanted to learn what this affiliate marketing was so I checked around for online opportunities. I didn’t want to rely on another shady employer or Veteran Work Programs which you had to know someone who knew someone to get on the inside. No thanks…I’m too old to buy into that anymore.
Learning Affiliate Marketing Changed My Thinking
I embarked on a journey learning this affiliate marketing with a Canadian company called the Wealthy Affiliate. I know it may be something you have heard of and maybe not. All I know is I started learning the techniques laid out in the program and it started to click with time. I began this blog website and started promoting this program as well as some other hosting programs and I saw results. It encouraged me to keep learning and writing on this site. And now it has been online for a year and a half. It does work and it can help any veteran looking for work. You just have to be committed to learning and implementing the tutorials and lessons.
It’s not for everyone but I finally decided to do something for me and this was the ticket. I have made money on my website but more importantly is I have learned a new skill that can help sustain me in my life for years to come. I don’t have to rely on government programs or veteran work programs. I did this all on my own with no boss, no one standing over me. No one critiquing my every move. No evaluations. It was all up to me to make it happen and I did.
Who Is Affiliate Marketing For?
Well, that’s an easy one. It’s for anyone at any age or learning level. If you can read and write you can do this. What’s more is it’s actually fun to do and I make an income at it. How much can you make? The sky is the limit. It just depends how much you want to put into it. Take a look at the getting started page with Wealthy Affiliate. You may be on the fence on what to do with your life as a veteran. As a Marine Corps vet myself I sought help through the VA. I ended up getting a little help but absolutely nothing as far as financial help or help finding a decent job. Sure they have Veteran Work Programs like the CWT (Cognitive Work Therapy) and I went through that. With a guy with an electrical certification and an honorable discharge I piled into a car with a few other veterans and they cold called places like McDonalds to see if they were hiring. No…no way. Not for $7.25 an hour at 50 something years old. It felt degrading and I will never go down that road again. The Wealthy Affiliate training program help me start my own business and I am forever grateful!
Don’t Wait For Veteran Work Programs To Change Your Life!
I served honorably in the Marine Corps and I’m proud of that. I’m not proud of the way our veterans are treated by some establishments. I hate seeing veterans homeless with no roof over their heads. It made me angry. No, it really ticked me off to say the least. I took matters into my own hands and started my own blogging business as an affiliate marketer. It was a smart move and I have time now to go do what I want. I love to fish. If I want to go fishing I go. I have a wife and kid. If I want to hang out with them I do. I owe my time to no one anymore. I work when I want to and am finally controlling my own destiny. I will not look to veteran work programs anymore and I’m fine with that.
If you are a veteran struggling to earn an income I encourage you to look at where our economy is headed. It’s a digital world now and that’s thanks to younger generations. Take advantage of it and learn how to work online. If you honorably served in the military you can do this too. Take a look at what one Wealthy Affiliate member posted to veterans in the program. Before I go I want to thank you for not only your service but for reading this post. I hope it was helpful to you and made you think a little. I don’t hate the VA’s but do think we have alot of veterans who need an opportunity to excel in life. I didn’t find that going through any veteran work programs.
